The Department of Chemistry has a long tradition of excellence in chemical education. Our program is certified by the American Chemical Society which is the world's largest scientific society. Our graduating seniors have excelled on the nationally normed Major Field Achievement Test in Chemistry prepared by the Educational Testing Service of Princeton, New Jersey.

25% have scored at or above the 90th percentile
50% have scored at or above the 70th percentile

Approximately 25% of our graduates go on to graduate school in chemistry and an additional 15% pursue post graduate programs such as medicine, law, optometry, and dentistry.

The chemistry program at Southeast encourages strong student-teacher relationships, emphasizing individual attention by our eleven faculty members all of whom have their PhD's. There are many opportunities to pursue research and individual scholarship that help students become independent thinkers and problem solvers. Many of our students have presented papers at professional meetings and have co-authored papers published in chemical journals. Our students have many employment opportunities in the chemistry department working as lab assistants, tutors, graders, and stockroom helpers. Several scholarships are awarded annually by the department to recognize the academic achievements of our chemistry students.

In addition to our chemistry programs, the department administers pre-pharmacy and medical technology programs. We offer a masters degree program in applied chemistry which includes a unique program in forensic chemistry utilizing the facilities and expertise of the Southeast Missouri Regional Crime Lab which is located on our campus.
