PUBLIC SERVICE ACTIVITIES

1. Presentations for public schools.

The Student Affiliates of ACS have sponsored and assisted with several programs designed to promote chemistry to elementary aged children. During the Spring semester of 1998, two days were spent in elementary schools (Tamms, IL and Clippard in Cape Girardeau, MO) conducting half-hour sessions of hands-on activities. The activities used were: Color Cyclones, chromatography of markers, and a discussion of solids vs. liquids during which Oobleck was made.

2. Girl Scout Day.

Girl Scout Day was held on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University on February 21, 1998. Almost 200 local girl scouts attended the event sponsored by the Linda Godwin Center for Science and Math Education. SAACS provided hands-on activities illustrating the differences in properties of salt water and distilled water. The scouts listed the chemistry activities as among their favorites.

3. National Chemistry Week

During the Fall semester for national Chemistry Week a group of 11 students spent a Saturday afternoon at the mall in Cape Girardeau during which kids could come by and work on activities related to density, acids and bases, and molecules.

4. Wacky Wednesday.

On November 11, 1998, on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University, a common hour event was held in the Program Lounge of the University Center to celebrate science. The ACS group joined forces with other clubs from biology, agriculture, geoscience and physics. A few demonstrations were included in the presentation along with a variety of hands-on activities aimed at university students.

All in all, the club estimates that in the Spring Semester alone, about 500 elementary students participated in the activities provided by SAACS members. Numbers were difficult to estimate for the fall events.
